Promotoras

The Promotoras, WHF's "Sonrisa Vida Sana", is a group of eight Mexican women who are leaders in the community of Winters. They are trained in outreach, diabetes education, reproductive health, adult, infant and child CPR/First Aid. They perform screenings for blood pressure and blood glucose, and six of them are registered Certified Application Assistants who can help families enroll in state and county health insurance programs.

Sonrisa Vida Sana provides access to health information and resources at schools, community meetings, health fairs, migrant camps, and the clinic. All education materials are offered in both English and Spanish.

The Promotoras provide education in the community about:

  • Medical and dental services offered through WHF
  • Preventative health programs (i.e. Every Woman Counts, and FPACT)
  • Mental health and substance abuse programs
  • Support groups
  • Diabetes care and prevention
  • Reproductive health
  • Health insurance programs for families
