WHF used the PHOTOVOICE methodology was in order to conduct a needs assessment i our community to accomplish the following:

  1. Use pictures to show the good and the bad about the community, and to suggest ways to make things better.
  2. Use photos to get people talking about important health issues in their community and increase awareness.
  3. Give people a way to show policymakers, community groups and other leaders how things look from their perspective.

Participants living in the community took photos in order to tell a particular story.  In Winters the subject was health: What about our community makes people healthier?  What makes people less healthy?  How could things be better?  Forty two adults and children of all ages and walks of life took photos documenting health in their community.  From all the images taken, each photographer selected images they felt best represented issues most important to them.  Then they worked together in groups to identify common themes among all of the photos and group them accordingly.  In the end, they chose seven: Food, Connectivity, Community Support, Environment, Youth Programs, Exercise, and Gardens.

The photos from this project were displayed  at the Briggs & Co. Gallery in Winters during the month of May.   A partial display of the exhibit can be seen at the Winters Public Library beginning June 6, 2011.

WHF will be working with community leaders and community based organizations this summer in order to address some of the health concerns that were expressed in the PHOTOVOICE project.  If you would like more information please contact Ana Kormos: akormos@wintershealth.org (530) 212-1040.
