Alternative Forms of Transportation, 2011

This is a picture of a Yolo Bus and a hot air balloon. It is not in every community where you can see so many different types of transportation (hot air balloons, golf carts, horse and buggy). Perhaps one day we can add a light rail to the list. The more people use alternative forms of transportation, the more cars are off the roads and the cleaner our air will be.

Eso es una foto del Camión de Yolo y un globo aerostático. Esto no se puede ver en cualquier comunidad, como aquí que uno puede ver tantos tipos de transportación (globos aerostáticos, carro de golf, caballo y carretas). Tal vez un día podemos añadir un transito rápido a la lista. Si la gente usara otros métodos alternativos de transportación, tendremos menos carros por la calle y el aire estará más limpio.

This is a path that many 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students use. There is a lot of trash and broken glass here. It is not a very safe place for students to walk through. It is very close to a cemetery and it is sad to see all of the trash blowing through the cemetery. This seems very disrespectful.

Este es un camino donde pasan muchos estudiantes en los 6, 7, y 8 grados. Hay mucha basura y vidrio roto aquí. No es un lugar muy seguro para caminar para los estudiantes. Este lugar es muy cerca del cementerio y es triste mirar toda la basura volando por el cementerio. Se ve muy irrespetuoso.

The Most Dangerous Road, 2010

This road is connected to a highway. I walk through this intersection everyday to go to school. When the crossing guard goes home there is no stop sign and the road is very dangerous. We need to have a stop sign here. It is very dangerous trying to cross this road without a stop sign.

Este camino esta conectado a una autopista. Yo camino por este intersección todos los días para ir a la escuela. Cuando no hay un guardia de cruce peatonal no hay señal de alto y camino es muy peligroso. Necesitamos tener una señal de alto aquí.

The tree on the street is partially blocking the stop sign and the other street. Clearing the tree branches would prevent possible car accidents.

We need more bike spaces that are convenient. This would improve health by encouraging more people to use their bikes which is healthier than using cars and pollutes less.

I don’t think that this rusty bike rack encourages anyone to use their bike or lock it here. I think we need nice, safe areas for people to park their bikes in Winters.

I think this photo could help others think about what they are not doing. One of the main reasons that there is poverty and a bad economy is that people are not “recycling”. Recycling builds a safe and clean community. Money saved by recycling can be put into good community programs.

Yo pienso que esta foto puede ayudar otras personas pensar en que les hace falta hacer. Unos de las razones principales es la pobreza y una economía mala, y nos falta reciclar. Reciclando promueve una comunidad segura y limpia. Gasta menos dinero a reciclar y este dinero puede ser usado para programas comunitarios.

There is a sign near my house that tells people to drive slowly in front of my house but people pass by very fast. This is dangerous for my family. I would like speed bumps to deter people from driving so fast.

This is the corner on the large street that passes in front of the high school. There are lots of children who walk here and I think that this intersection is very dangerous. There is so much traffic and so many children that there should be a stop sign or a light here so that children can cross safely.

Many key access routes for walking or bike traffic have been closed encouraging people to use a car. Walking and biking are healthy activities that require less public money to maintain. Cars are the preferred, and subsidized, means of transportation in Winters. We need to promote connectivity and healthy activities as a means of transportation.

Muchas rutas para caminar o andar en bicicleta son cerradas animando las personas a manejar un carro. Caminando y andar en bicicleta son actividades saludables que requieren menos dinero para mantener. Manejar un carro es el método de transportación preferido en Winters. Necesitamos promover rutas de conectividad y actividades saludables.

This photo was taken as I was walking on Main Street in Winters. Life is rough with four legs on the road in addition to your own. I use a walker and there is a lot of sidewalk repair that is needed that is important for safety. The new intersection on Main St., with the brick work, is very difficult to cross when you use a walker.

Esta foto fue sacada cuando estuve caminando en la calle Main en Winters. La vida es dura cuando tienes 4 pies en adición de los tuyos. Yo uso un andador y hay muchas aceras que necesitan reparación que es importante para seguridad. La nueva intersección hecho con ladrillo en la calle Main es muy difícil de cruzar cuando se usa un andador.

This is a picture of Manzanita and Red Bud Streets. There is not a stop sign here. A lot of youth play in this area and there have been accidents here. We need to have a stop sign here so people slow down.

There are no lights here at night. There is only one way in and one way out. I walk though this alley every night and it scares me. It is not safe. This is a place where drugs are sold and used. We could make this a safer place for people who are walking.

This is a sidewalk that many students walk on to get to school. This is a good example of a safe walkway for students. Other sidewalks in the community could be improved to promote walking. We could use more sidewalks like this one that takes people to Yolo Housing from the downtown.

Esto es una acera que muchos estudiantes usan para llegar a la escuela. Eso es un buen ejemplo de un camino seguro para los estudiantes. Otras aceras en la comunidad podrían ser mejoradas para promover la caminata. Podríamos usar más aceras así como una que lleve a la gente de Yolo Housing al centro del pueblo.

These photos show what the first part of the Putah Creek trail looks like and what the second half looks like. This path starts out great but then quickly leads to areas that could cause injury. We should make improvements to this trail so that more people can walk on it to get from one place to another.

This is a picture of a person walking safely across the street. In Esparto there are clearly designated cross walks for pedestrians. We need this in Winters.
